David Hassall - Director

David joined the Practice in 1983. At crucial times he has headed the Salcombe Totnes and Kingsbridge offices as the Practice expanded. He holds an LLM in Commercial Law and an MSc in Advanced Legal Practice with Distinction and the Higher Rights of Audience Certificate ( all courts), his practice has developed well beyond the South Hams. His contentious work has included the prosecution and defence of Regulatory Offences, where he has appeared as trial advocate in the Crown Court. On the civil side, appearances in the County and High Courts contractual disputes, shareholders matters and property litigation. David also undertakes related non contentious work in the form of company sales and purchases, standard terms, distribution agreements both in the UK and Europe.

An author on property law and graduate of London and Oxford Universities, Raymond was formerly a partner with a leading Hong Kong firm specialising in major commercial property transactions.  He returned to the UK in 1995, becoming a partner with Bartons.  He heads the Bartons’ property team from our Salcombe offices,  from which he serves not only a local client base but also one in  London and the South East for clients based in London, South Africa and China.  His specialties include Landlord and Tenant matters, investment properties, second homes and high value residential plot sales for developers.

Lee Hassall - Director

David Hassall - Director

David has Higher Rights of Audience in Criminal and Civil Courts as well as being a Master of Law and Master of Science with distinction in Legal Practice.

David has extensive advocacy experience in the lower courts, QBD and Chancery courts and Crown Cour.t In recent years he has been heavily involved in Fisheries cases both defending claims against Fishermen and Owners and as a prosecutor for Devon and Southern Sea Fisheries Committees. David has also been appointed by major Marine Insurers to defend Foreign Masters seamen charged with a variety of offences under the Merchant Shipping Act. He has recently gained an acquittal of two directors on all of 12 Crown Court Indictments.

Jo Pummery - Director

Jo joined Bartons in 2001 having gained experience working for major ship insurers and P&I Clubs with a niche Marine Law firm.  Jo deals with a broad range of cases including crew and passenger personal injury and fatality claims, collisions, salvage and negligence claims on behalf of both Claimants and Defendants.

 Jo has completed one leg of the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race from The Bahamas to Hawaii and is a PADI Open Water Diver.

Cory Cuff - Solicitor

Cory joined Bartons in 2007 after graduating from Exeter University.  She was admitted as a Solicitor in 2009 and undertakes a mixture of contentious work, with particular emphasis on marine law and personal injury.

Cory has been a member of the Federation of Shotokan Karate Great British Squad since 2000 and earned her third Dan black belt at only 18.  To date, Cory has won 6 British titles, 2 European titles and World Silver and Bronze medals.
